Helping a Teen Runaway
Detail Description:
A seventeen, almost eighteen year old neighbor girl, has been having problems with the parents. This involved a step mother and her father who both hit her. She has been a friend, not a girlfriend of our 19 y/o son who graduated from the same high shool last year.
She has come by to talk to us four times in the past month about her problems. Her parents hit her and threatened to throw her out. Well I told her one day when my wife wasn't home if she needed a place to stay, to come here. This upset my wife of 27 years, as she said we could get into legal problems for getting involved.
Last night, "Melissa" was thrown out, and came to us for help. My wife, herself the beneficiary of one of God's miracles, told her we would take her somewhere else she could stay. Which we did. I wasn't comfortable with the friend we took her to, as I feel they may be part of the cause of the friction.
"Meilissa" always seemed like a very nice girl, but many do. I want to help her in the worst way. We even have a spare bedroom that she has offered to rent from us. She will be 18 in November and still in high school.
Someone please advise a course of action I can take to save this young girl from the street, without finding ourselves in legal trouble. I feel like NOW is my time to act as her Angel, and do this. I need your guidance.

child protection services
Angel Message:
I am shocked that child protection services have not acted on your reports. Please don't stop telling. Get the police involved if you have to. These are innocent children at the mercy of a very sick individual. Are there any other family members whose help you can enlist. Please, please don't give up on helping these children.
Hugs,
Marilyn

Call Child Protection
Angel Message:
You are those children best hope and friend right now. Please, let me encourage you to call and call and call Child Protection. Check out your state's website for the laws and rules governing those agencies and call United Way First Call for Help. If you think they are in imediate danger, call the police.
Please also know that studies have shown that when children who are abused have at least one stable adult in their lives, their recovery is much better and easier and faster... you can be that hope.
I know it is hard...please do not give up hope and please keep telling anyone who will listen...doctor (mandated reporter), teachers, clergy, neighbors, even her welfare worker. My prayers are with you all.
